The operations on the future potential carbon storage appraisal well (CarbonNet project) in Western Australia commenced in the beginning of December 2019.
More than 100 crew is expected to work to complete the drilling within the 45 to 60 days period depending on the weather conditions.
The Noble Tom Prosser drilling rig is located approximately 8km offshore from Gippsland in Latrobe Valley in Victoria, Australia.
As part of the CarbonNet project, the Gular-1 appraisal well aims to retrieve rock samples from the depth of 1,500m below the seabed to allow scientists to confirm whether the rock properties in the area are suitable to store carbon dioxide. The Victorian and Commonwealth governments in Australia initiated the CarbonNet project as part of a suite of solutions with the potential to reduce CO2 emissions and to address climate change. The aim of the project is to investigate the potential for establishing a commercial-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) network in Bass Strait – first of its kind in Australia.
AGR’s Australia team is proud to be assigned as the drilling management contractor of the project with the responsibility to support the entire life-cycle of the drilling programme, from well engineering and design through to supervision and execution of the project in addition to managing the Geophysical, Geotechnical, HSE and regulatory aspects.
As announced early 2018, AGR has extensive experience related to carbon capture and storage. Our Reservoir teams have provided petrophysical, geophysical, geomechanical and reservoir engineering support to regional and international carbon management projects in addition to managing the currently ongoing drilling project.
