Software is still only as good as the people using it. The Senior Associate at AGR Software explains in more detail how to manage data to create value.
Present day software has improved by leaps and bounds and is able to produce extremely accurate predictions; however the old adage of “Garbage In, Garbage Out” (GIGO) holds more true than ever.
There are perceptions that because the latest software is so good, it must always give the correct results, so people with limited experience are able to understand how to enter data into it but not able to determine if that data entered is correct. Without experience they are not able to review the results and decide if they match what they were expecting. It is now possible to find information quite easily but determining if the information found is correct, requires experience.
In the oil and gas, AGR’s iQx software
has been developed to bring in data from different sources so that it may be accessed easily and compared against information from other wells. This includes experiences both good and bad from all phase of the drilling operation and does not just cover the geological issues but issues above the mudline, such as tool failure, rig problems etc.
This is where experience and training come into the picture when selecting information. The ability to take the data and using experience and training transform that into useful information that develops into knowledge, which is a combination of information, experience and insight that should ensure the information entered into the software is not “Garbage”.
The follow in from entering the data into the software is the experience to review the results and decide if the results correspond to experience in the real worlds.
